Gran Fondo Della Vernaccia

The Gran Fondo Della Vernaccia is one of Italy’s best cycling races, as it combines the beauty of San Gimignano (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) together with the splendid hills of Tuscany. The professional organization and the friendly and relaxing atmosphere of the Gran Fondo Della Vernaccia make this event in once-in-a-lifetime experience! You’ll be immersed in the strong emotions of the competition, but you’ll also feel joyful! This 5-star cycling holiday trip showcases Tuscan scenery and traditional cuisine using local products. The competition itself is one of the most anticipated in the country, and there is an average of 1,500 participants each year. The course is a part of different competitions, including the UNESCO Cycling Tour and the Giro del Granducato di Toscana.

You can choose between three different courses. The Gran Fondo is 165 km long and has an altitude of 2250m high, The Medio Fondo is 111 km long and has an altitude of 1550m high. Would you rather cycle a shorter ride than you can cycle the Corto ride? This ride is 70 km long and has an altitude of, 1100m. The competitive tracks are slightly shorter and sweeter than the previous edition. The symbolic climb will again be the one that goes through Canada, Gaggiano, and Pestello and leads to Castellina in Chianti.

There are three different course lengths:

• Gran Fondo 165 km; approx, 2250m total altitude
• Medio Fondo 111 km; approx, 1550m total altitude
• Corto 70 km; approx, 1100m total altitude

Day 1
Check in Friday
Check-in at your hotel in Colle Val d'Elsa. For those who want to have a pick up at Pisa or Florence airport please contact us. The tour leader will explain the coming activities and itinerary for this Gran Fondo Della Verrnaccia tour.
Day 2
Saturday
In the morning you’ll go on a tour around San Gimignano, stretching your legs and familiarizing yourself with the local roads in preparation for the pending challenge. The afternoon is free for you to discover San Gimignano and Colle Val d'Elsa in your own time.
Day 3
Sunday
Finally, the day of the race! After an early breakfast, you’ll be taken to the center of San Gimignano where there will be some time for last-minute preparations. This is your moment: time to use your energy and replace it with the emotions of the race. When the competition is over, you’ll hold a pasta party, allowing you to let go of the emotions of the race, meet other participants, and stock up on energy. The competition itself is one of the most anticipated in the country and there is an average of 1,500 participants each year.

Departure day
Departure day...  a good flight back home or a pleasant stay in Italy. Transfers to the airports of Pisa & Florence will be made by the tour guides on request.
Medical
Medical Certificate
MEDICAL CERTIFICATE You must have a Medical Sports Certificate which was issued within 6 months of the event, which must be presented at race registration. This should state: 'The data of the athlete' the indication of the sport for which it required the visit to the doctor: CYCLING the statement of the sports doctor that THE ATHLETE, ON THE BASE OF MEDICAL CONTROL, DOES NOT HAVE CONTRAINDICATIONS

Airport

  • Florence International Airport is named after one of the most famous Italians – Amerigo Vespucci. There is no train connection to the airport. From Florence railway station there are good connections to all kinds of cities in Italy. The airport lies only four kilometers away from Florence. Shuttle buses leave every 30 minutes. Florence airport is only 80 km away from the airport of Pisa, Galileo Galilei.
  • Pisa Airport is 2 km from Pisa, 20 km from Lucca, and 80 km from Florence. You can find the train station just outside the terminal. Pisa Airport lies directly on the highway Florence-Pisa-Livorno. Because the airport is so close to the city a ride to the center of Pisa does not take more than 10 minutes.

Trains

  • Lucca’s train station is situated on the south side of town in Piazza Ricasoli. Lucca is on the Florence-Viareggio train line, with frequent service to Florence. The ride takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to Lucca.
  • Also, buses run daily to Lucca as well and leave from Piazza Verdi next to the tourist office.
