Bike Rentals Europe

Lake Como, in Northern Italy’s Lombardy region, is an upscale resort area. It’s better known for the dramatic scenery, set against the foothills of the Alps. At the bottom of the southwest branch lies the city of Como, home to Renaissance architecture and a funicular that travels up to the mountain town of Brunate. From an architectural point of view, the Renaissance Villas alone are worth the ticket. In professional cycling, on the other hand, Lake Como is a Mecca, the battlefield of one of the 5 “Classiche Monumento”. The Giro di Lombardia. The ascent of Ghisallo, Civiglio, and the Sormano Wall. Places of worship for those who love cycling.

Recently Lake Como is celebrated in Hollywood by movie stars who make it a holiday destination, a film set, a classy place, and even a source of pride. But regardless of fashions, objectively it seems that nature has made a particular effort to create a water basin set in a spectacular setting: The Alps. An upside-down Y-shaped lake, a bucolic masterpiece with majestic tones that awaken the senses. A perfect picture can cross over into the sense of art. The Lake Como self-guided cycling Trip will lead you to the most iconic places without making too much effort. Grab your bike and cycle along the western shore of the lake via the Greenway del Lago. Enjoy the Renaissance Villas and their incredible gardens. Indulge in a lakeside lunch in Varenna and take a deep breath looking at the mountains from the lakeside of Bellagio.

This Tour is perfect for those who:

  • Want to discover Lake Como in an alternative way
  • Would like to feel like a movie star for a few days
  • Want to enjoy the culinary tradition of the lake
  • Like to cycle around 30-40km a day
  • Want to visit the magnificent Renaissance Villas and their amazing gardens
  • Enjoy the warm and sunny weather during cycling
Day 1
Arrival at Como
Arrival at any time. Enjoy the city of Como
Day 2
Como to Menaggio - distance 39km
The first stage of this tour is an easy ride, almost flat, entirely on a paved road. With the possibility of an alternative route in the stretch from Colonno to Tremezzo: the Greenway del Lago. A cycle/pedestrian path that offers a spectacular view of this part of Lake Como as it runs along the coast crosses villages and the transit of motor vehicles is not allowed, therefore safe. However, in some places, it may be necessary to get off the bike and walk a few meters, especially for those traveling by a road bike with narrow tires. It may also be necessary to carry the bike up and down some steps. We strongly suggest taking this path by bicycle, but those who prefer to simplify can safely stay on the coastal road, which does not present any difficulties with the bike.
Day 3
Menaggio to Colico - distance 41km
The second stage from Menaggio to Colico is a totally flat, easy, and troubled ride. From Menaggio you’ll ride on cycling paths pretty much the whole way to Colico, it is a truly spectacular route that runs along the mountains in some sections and skims the lake in others. It is not all paved, some sections are in light gravel and well maintained. It is certainly the most evocative stage, a cycle/pedestrian path that runs along almost the entire northeast coast of Lake Como and touches the road open to traffic for only a few kilometers. In some sections, you’ll pass through semi-open tunnels, however, closed to car traffic.
Day 4
Colico to Bellagio - distance 33km
Get ready to ride to Bellagio. Today's stage is the shortest ride, with a ferry to take, but with a few climbs. Get on the bike and ride from Colico to the Abbey of Piona, a magical place. You’ll cross Dorio, Corenno Plinio, and Dervio, ride along the "Lungolago Degli Ulivi" to Bellano and continue to Varenna, a fishing village with an irresistible charm. Varenna is one of the pearls of Lake Como, an exclusive tourist destination. Get to the ferry port of Varenna and cross the lake to Bellagio, it’s only 15 min ride, and get the chance to see Lake Como from the water.
Day 5
Bellagio to Como - distance 35km
The last stage will take you back to Como. This ride is never flat, a continuous up and down, with some climbs 7-8% steep. It's a very beautiful road and the best way to end your adventure. From Bellagio climb up to Lezzeno, located in a privileged position from which you can admire the Comacina Island, and the Villa del Balbianello, in addition to Monte Crocione. The cliffs overlooking the lake are the distinctive feature of this part of Lake Como. Ride to Punta Della Cavagnola which is the bottom end of Mount San Primo, the highest mountain of Lake Como. From here you can admire the entire branch of the Lake. It is the most evocative point of the ride because the view is truly spectacular. From Blevio you'll ride down to Como and this is your final destination.
