Cycling holiday from Mount Etna to the Ionian Sea on a road bike

The history of Mount Etna is not only that of the most active volcano in Europe since 2011, but it’s also the history of Eastern Sicily itself. A bike ride through the Sicilian hinterland, in the shade of mighty Etna and among extraordinary national parks. It’s a fantastic journey because of the shifts between history and mythology to the discovery of enchanting tiny villages and foregone flavors.

You will ride through tiny villages, with always the azure blue Mediterranean Sea near the track. Your start will be in Nicolosi with its stunning natural landscape and excellent weather all year round. From Nicolosi, you follow the way along Mount Etna. Cycle around Mount Etna and visit medieval villages like Randazzo and Bronte before arriving at the coastline of the Ionian Sea. For the last 2 days, you will visit old historical villages such as Taormina & Giardini Naxos. This region around Mount Etna is perfect for a great cycling holiday because of the sunny climate and all-year-round warm climate. Sicily is the perfect island for a great cycling holiday. You won’t be the first one to discover that Sicily is a cyclist’s paradise. In addition, this beautiful historical bike program on the Sicily islands includes unique features. Day 1
Check in
Individual arrival at Nicolosi, handover of the bikes and the roadbook and maps containing all the information you will need.
Day 2
Etna to Nicolosi - 20km
Arrival at Rifugio Sapienza by public transportation or with a private transfer. Possibility to go further up the Etna Mountain with funicular, four-wheel-drive and a guide and return to Nicolosi with the bikes or with bus. In case of unfavourable weather conditions, public bus transfer to Catania and possibility of a sightseeing-tour through the town centre.
Day 3
Nicolosi to Bronte - 49km
You are leaving Nicolosi on quiet back roads, almost all the time downhill you arrive at the nature reserve "Forre laviche del Simeto" to see the famous Saracen bridge. From here you will pass through huge pistachio plantations that announce the near city of Bronte. Overnight in a country manor in the midst of a pistachio plantation.
Day 4
Bronte to Maniace to Randazzo - 30km or 36km
Passing outside of Bronte you will soon arrive in Maniace where you can visit the Castello Nelson and the ex-monastery of Santa Maria di Maniace. Continuing on secondary streets you will reach Randazzo, with its rich and interesting medieval town centre.
Day 5
Randazo, Castiglione, Gole dell'Alcantara to Giardini Naxos - 44km
Today will be an easy downhill trip along the "strada del vino dell’Etna” with many winemakers along the way. From the gracious town centre of Castiglione, you will have a nice view over the Alcantara valley, which separates the Etna from the Nebrodi forests and which you will visit further down the road. Your final destination will be Giardini Naxos on the Ionian coast, where you might enjoy a regenerating bath in its splendid waters.
Day 6
Giardini Naxos, Taormina to Giardini Naxos - 20km
After only a few kilometres uphill you will reach Taormina, pearl of the Ionian coast and by itself worth a travel. Here you will have the possibility to visit Castelmola, a picturesque medieval village 5 km above Taormina with breathtaking view over the whole bay and from Calabria to Mount Etna, before you return to Giardini Naxos.
Day 7
Giardini Naxos to Acitrezza 37km
This easy trip takes you along the Ionian coast, also known as "lemon riviera". After a short uphill slope, you reach Acitreale and its interesting baroque city centre. The stage finishes in Acitrezza.
Day 8
Departure day
After breakfast end of tour and individual departure or extension with additional days.

Transfer per person, min 2 pax (to be paid on-site):

  • Catania Airport – Nicolosi €35
  • Acitrezza – Catania Airport €35

For arrivals or transfers after 10pm a supplement of € 10 per person is applied.

Please note:

  • For the excursion with the alpine guides, cableway and Jeeps on Mt. Etna trekking shoes and warm clothes in spring and autumn are necessary.
  • During high season (mid-June until end of August) on the coastal stages more intense traffic is to be expected
  • Stage Nicolosi/Etna: possibility to go up to the Rifugio Sapienza by bike or with a private transfer organized by the B&B in Nicolosi: € 25 p.p./min. 2 people. It is also possible to go up to the Rifugio Sapienza by public bus but it does not accept bikes.
