Self-guided cycling Sardinia

Sardinia road cycling holiday, experience all the beauties of this wonderful island. Sardinia is the second-largest Mediterranean island and has a lot to offer. The Sardinia on road bike Trip covers an outstanding cycling loop in the Northern part of the island. It is possible to start the grand tour either in Alghero or Olbia, whichever is the most convenient for you. Feel like a pro just as Vincenzo Nibali or Fabio Aru in the Giro d’Italia! Enjoy panoramic medieval villages, sunshiny beaches, or small mountain ranges with physical action. Furthermore, the locals are just like all Italians, warm and friendly. A warm welcome awaits you when you arrive on this wonderful Island.

Your start will be in Alghero, a very popular tourist resort. Walk around the ancient walls of the old town in the evening and enjoy Alghero’s history and Sardinian culture. From Alghero, you will start your tour on perfectly secondary paved roads, almost free of traffic. The route will take you right to the middle of Sardinia as you follow your way due to the traditional villages and old towns, like Bonorva and Pattada. At last, you go down to the East Coast town of La Caletta. This is beautiful because of its ancient town of fishermen and the cozy restaurants. The coastal way along the Mediterranean Sea brings you to the lively center of Olbia. After Olbia, you’ll cycle to the city of Castelsardo before you reach finally Alghero again.

Day 1
Check in
Transfer or independent arrival to Olbia
Day 2
Cagliari to Muravera - 103km
Leave the coast and ride inland where forbidding peaks look down on endless expanses of ancient cork forests strewn with weird, wind-blasted granite boulders to make the scenery dramatic. You are in the heart of the island’s major cork production area. Hundreds of cork businesses (sugherifici), large and small, are concentrated around Calangianus and Tempio, the two main centres of the area. Ride past the impressive valley of the moon, consisting of amazing granite rocks shaped by the force of the weather over thousands of years to end your day back to the coast in Castelsardo, a charming village perched high up on a cape overlooking the sea.
Day 3
Muravera to Orroli - 93km
The route over the rolling hills of Anglona boasts some breath-taking views over the coast and Corsica. After the adrenaline kick descent of Scala di Giocca, you reach Alghero, arguably the nicest town in Sardinia.
Day 4
Orroli to Baressa - 77km
Keep riding off the beaten path on the rolling hills Marmilla, where the Giara Plateau lays. Great scenic roads with no traffic will lead you to a part of Sardinia rich in history. At “Su Nuraxi” in Barumini, the Nuragic Civilization reached the apex of its development. Su Nuraxi is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Day 5
Baressa to Buggerru - 80km
Back to the coast! Ride west and cross the fields of Campidano. Enjoy a spectacular 7 kms long descent before reaching the golden beach of Portixeddu. End your day in the small village of Buggerru, formerly an important mining town. The mines have been dismissed many years ago, however plenty of remains are still visible.
Day 6
Buggerru to Sant’Antioco - 67/84km
Leave Buggerru heading South along a dramatic coastline. Beautifully surrounded by Mediterranean bush, is the village of Nebida, where you can admire the looming mass of Pan di Zucchero cliff and the old Lamarmora ore washery. Nestled in the Mediterranean bush, it looks out over the sea at the end of a long descent down 540 steps. Then go island hopping to Carloforte, where locals still fish the Red Tuna fish, and Sant’Antioco. Overnight in Sant’Antioco village centre, where you can enjoy the local lively lifestyle.
Day 7
Sant’Antioco to Pula - 85km
Final catwalk of your tour is the beautiful Costa del Sud with its gleaming white beaches, unspoilt natural landscape and imposing cliffs. This coastal road, a 20 km sequence of short climbs and exciting descents, is without a doubt one of the best cycling roads all over Sardinia. At Nora, explore the ancient Phoenician settlement, before celebrating the end of this fantastic trip with a cold Ichnusa beer in Pula.
Day 8
Departure day
