Cycling the Empordà: A Complete Journey Through Girona’s Scenic Landscapes

The great tour of the Empordà starts in the magnificent city of Girona and offers a complete itinerary across the Empordà, one of the most beautiful landscapes of Catalonia. With its mild climate and extensive network of quiet country roads, rolling plains, and challenging climbs, Girona has become a favorite home base for professional cyclists from around the world. The city exudes a true cycling spirit — each morning, groups of riders set out to conquer the region’s classic climbs and scenic routes. Girona is equally appealing for leisure cyclists. The Girona Greenways cycle path, once an old railway line, offers a beautiful ride from Olot in the Pyrenees to Sant Feliu de Guíxols on the Costa Brava.

The nearby Empordà plain is another gem for cycle tourism. Its peaceful backroads, varied landscapes, and rich cultural and historical heritage make every ride an unforgettable experience. You will have a fantastic view of this region, inland and coast. In just a few kilometers, you will see a great variety of landscapes, such as medieval villages, little coves, or traditional fishing villages. It’s a challenging route for medium-level cyclists. The route is mostly downhill, passes through Girona itself, and has become one of the area’s most popular cycling tours.

Highlights of this tour:

  • Medium road bike tour, to enjoy all the details of this country,
  • Beautiful white sand beaches, ancient archeological ruins, and friendly people,
  • Cycle through centenary vineyards and olive yards and taste the fantastic local gastronomy,
  • Admire the artistic genius of Salvador Dalí in Cadaqués, Figueres and Púbol
  • Take your time in the village of Cadaqués, where Dalí used to live and work and admire the artistic genius in Cadaqués, Figueres ,and Púbol.
  • Visit a cellar and taste the local wine of the Empordà, internationally recognized.
Day 1
Arrival at the city of Girona
In Girona, there is plenty to see and do. The city is famous for having one of the best preserved Jewish old towns in the world, The Cathedral boasts one of the largest stone vaulted spaces and you can walk along the city's ancient walls, which is a recommended highlight!
Day 2
Loop Girona - 65,5km - 955m+
Delivery of the GPS and necessary documentation in our office. Bike fitting if bikes are rented. On the first day, you discover the inland countryside of the Llémena Valley with its big ancient farms. After surrounding the small volcano of Adri, you continue crossing some humid and wooded areas. Today is a warm-up ride.
Day 3
Girona - St Feliu de Guixols - 57,7km - 999m+
The route starts south through a plane until reaching Llagostera. From there you start the climb of Sant Grau (465m). After passing the col, a great descent with fantastic views over the Mediterranean Sea will be recorded in your memory for the rest of your life. This coastal road has been used for the Tour de France in 2009. You finish the ride at the beach of Sant Pol, just next to the main beach of Sant Feliu.
Day 4
St Feliu de Guixols - Torroella de Montgrí - 60,9km - 725m+
Starting from Sant Pol, you cross Platja d’Aro, Calonge, and Palamós, 3 tourist villages in front of the sea. Also on the coast, you will reach Calella, a cute fisherman village with its houses right in front of the beach. Calella is considered one of the best villages of the Costa Brava. Starting from Calella you deal with the short but steep climb to the lighthouse of Sant Sebastià (climb 2 km 150m+). After that, you climb to Begur and reach the Gulf of Pals with its long sandy beach. From there you ride inland to Pals, a famous medieval village. It’s worth to spend some time walking on its narrow streets. After crossing some more medieval villages you reach Torroella de Montgrí, just under its castle on the top of the mountain.
Day 5
Torroella – Castelló d’Empúries - 48,5km - 265m+
Today is an easy ride. This stage enables riders to cycle quietly towards the beaches in Empúries and L’Escala. In Empúries, we recommend you take the time to visit the archeological site with Greek and Roman ruins dating from 600 BC, the gateway of the classic cultures to the Iberian Peninsular. The route finishes in Castelló d’Empúries with a stunning cathedral that shows how powerful the village was in ancient times.
Day 6
Castelló - Perafita - Figueres - 69,6 - 1375m+ / 80km - 1300m+
From here you will cross a small wetland with an ornithological reserve, then the ride climbs the mountain pass of Perafita. Optional ride (11km) to reach Cadaqués, where famous artist Dalí used to live and come back climbing the Perafita col again. From there you start descending to the flat area until reaching Port de la Selva. From there, another climb brings you up to the abbey of Sant Pere de Rodes and later you descend to Figueres where you stay overnight. We recommend visiting the Dalí Museum, with its surrealistic paintings.
Day 7
Figueres - Girona - 68,9km - 1016m+
Today you will ride on quiet back roads through the undulated inland combining pine forests and agriculture areas, with many cozy villages. Finally you will climb up to the Sanctuary of Els Àngels as a “happy end”, with spectacular views. You will finish the route in Girona, where you can have dinner at one of the amazing restaurants downtown.
Day 8
Departure day
Departure from Girona after breakfast.
