Geographical position and climate
Montenegro (officially the Republic of Montenegro) is located on the southwestern edge of the Balkan Peninsula. It has a coastline along the Adriatic Sea and shares land borders with Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, and Albania. Across the Adriatic Sea, it is relatively close to Italy. Despite its small size, Montenegro’s terrain is extremely varied, from rugged mountains in the north to narrow coastal plains in the west.
Because of this varied terrain, Montenegro spans multiple climatic zones. Along the coast, it has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. In the central valleys and plains (such as around Lake Skadar and the Zeta River), the climate is a bit more modified, with warmer summers and somewhat cooler winters. In the high mountain regions in the north, the climate shifts to sub-alpine: winters are cold and snowy, while summers are moderate and relatively short.
On the coast, towns like Podgorica (though inland but in a warm valley) can reach very high summer temperatures, sometimes above 40°C. Meanwhile, coastal areas also enjoy a high number of sunny days, while the mountainous north can hold snow for months.
